DOCTOR DOOM The penultimate Marvel bad guy! Doctor Doom in a character as enigmatic, as he is brutal to those he feels deserve his wrath (which, let's face it heroes, is just about everyone). Born with an intelligence so extreme, that only a very few individuals could ever match him, Victor Von Doom was born into poverty. He saw how brutal regimes could dominate the area's that they hold sway over. But, rather than combat them for the betterment of good, Doom chose instead to eliminate those dictators, and take their place! And while Doom can certainly be a benevolent tyrant to those he rules, he does demand absolute fealty from his subjects.
Dooms genius is such that he constructed for himself the magnificent, yet fearsome armor that has become his namesake. Giving him strength, endurance, and invulnerability in the superhuman levels. Doom is constantly enhancing, and re-equipping his armor with the most advanced weaponry that his devious intellect can fathom. It was through this armor that Doom was able to successfully depose the rulers of his home country of Latveria, and install himself as absolute ruler. Through the wealth of both the country, as well as his inventions, Doom turned Latveria from a backward nation, into a world power to be feared.
But, never being satisfied with the power he had gained, Doom constantly lusted for more. Through his inestimable cleverness he has syphoned the very Power Cosmic from the Silver Surfer.
As well as that of the actual source of the Power Cosmic himself, Galactus!
Doctor Doom would use both his diplomatic immunity, coupled with his countries resources, to attempt to rule the entire world. But each time, he is thwarted by his most hated of rivals: the Fantastic Four. They are the proverbial albatross around Doom's neck, besting him through brawn, brains, wisdom, and will.

SUPERMAN
It would be very hard to start with any other hero, as Superman is the prototype for pretty much all of them. While there were certainly characters before Superman, there were never any that could inspire the genre of Superheroes as much as the iconic Kryptonian.
Superman is a character that has a plethora of powers/abilities: super strength, invulnerability, super speed, flight, and various vision powers. But, as the newest movie by the amazing James Gunn perfectly highlights, its Supermans humanity that truly makes him stand head and shoulders above the rest. Often called the "big, blue, boyscout", amongst other names, Supermans kindness, and belief in the good of everyone, is what motivates him to to push back against adversaries that are just plain scary, such as Darkseid, Doomsday, and Mongul.
But its also the supporting cast that makes Superman/Clark Kent a very interesting character. As Investigative Journalist Clark Kent, Superman has developed an almost familial relationship with the members of the Daily Planet Newspaper staff. Jimmy Olson, " don't call me Chief" Perry White, Cat Grant, and of course, Lois Lane, have all become characters that are just as important to Superman as the man himself.
